ONE OR MORE WILD CARDS LIKELY TO MAKE PLAYOFFS
We started talking playoffs in today's (Tuesday) Atlantic League Notebook, which went out to subscribers some time ago. This is the premise we presented.
Some newspapers have been listing the major league wild card data in their standings for weeks now, but this subject also carries importance in the Atlantic League since it seems very real that Southern Maryland and York could capture both first and second half divisional titles.
The Blue Crabs had a two and one half-game lead in the Liberty Division after a daytime win Tuesday, and the Revolution were a mere half-game behind pacesetting Lancaster in the Freedom bracket. It is key to remember that whenever a team wins both halves the wild card or possibly two such playoff teams will be those with the best full-season records, which means both teams could come from the same division.
If Southern Maryland and York win both halves, this is what the wild card race looked like entering Tuesday evening:
Team W L Pct. GB
Bridgeport 50 44 .532 ----
Camden 48 46 .511 2.0
Long Island 47 47 .500 3.0
Lancaster 44 48 .478 5.0
Somerset 45 50 .474 5.5
Newark 31 64 .326 19.5
The Notebook also had stories on the following:
--Which teams have sold the most players to major league organizations through the years? You may find some surprises.
--Why is Butch Hobson popular once more in New England?
--From the baseball diamond to a key university position for this player
--Notes and quotes from around the Atlantic League
The Atlantic League Notebook is published twice each week for subscribers. Learn how you can enjoy all the fun elsewhere on this page.
